Running a little rough

Post by wngd » Mon Jun 15, 2015 7:12 pm

I was on a nice ride to breakfast in Paris (ON!) on the weekend and found she was riding a little rough, not surging but hesitating in 4th gear at 60 mph. No trouble accelerating, not trying to stall in neutral. Engine was warm.

After battery cables and exhaust tightening, what to check? I'd like to do the ground fix but am too nervous to pull the tank myself. Would do the desmog at the same time.

Could be something as simple as a tank of bad gas, especially if you had just filled up. I'd burn through that tank and refill (at a different gas station :) ) , before I started tearing things apart. Been there, done that, by the way !

I had indeed just got gas and that thought crossed my mind. Battery cables and checking the exhaust bolts are just maintenance so I'll do that anyway. Thanks.

I would agree with Al on this one, several times I have gotten a bad tank of gas.

I also agree with Al on this. My bet would be on bad gas....

Just in case, you may want to check your air filter, in case is it plugged.

As long as we're all guessin'.... my guess is  ...the plugs are fouled. Get out there and open 'er up  ...burn the carbon out o' her. That's my story an' I'm stickin' to it... besides, my solution is funner. :anxious: (Is that a word?)

:) :) :) .......... I wouldn't touch the exhaust bolts .......... once they are torqued with crush washers they are good unless the washers burn out ...... then you have to replace them ....... too much tightening can strip them in the cylinder head then you have real problems ............ jmho .......... wthfdik .......... I used anti seize on mine ........ acorn nuts will fry on the bolts and start the bolts out of the head when you try to remove them ....... they are in there at a set depth ....... check the manual .......

Hammer sent you an inbox. Was thinking this Friday but I can do a weekday next week?
I took two 1/2 hour rides today, the big girl is still hesitating a bit at constant throttle but accelerates fine and no backfiring.
I tightened the exhaust (unless the gasket is compromised), I tightened the battery terminals and no difference. I'll check and make sure the spark plugs are tight. I did the oil change this Spring but didn't refresh the K&N filter. I'll buy a recharge kit and make sure it's clean.

After that I have no idea but clutch and brake fluids need changing

Did you try the Seafoam in it??
I usually run some injector cleaner through and runner hard on 401 for 10 miles.

Got a houseful this weekend, but we can figure a time.

Mine was sputtering the other day. I'm hoping just bad gas or the fact it was dumping rain when I fueled it the last time. Had me nervous tho, thought a tow was in the near future. Topped it some better gas and that seamed to help. I havent rode it since either tho. What symptoms does the ground issue give?

Bad ground will give you harder starting and surging at light to medium throttle.
