Starter Button Issue ?

Post by Wrangler » Mon Jul 14, 2014 10:55 am

2002 VTX1800C
Odometer: 40,000km

Looking for some advice here …. I have cruised various forums and I am suspecting the culprit is the starter button.

Bought the bike in spring of 2013, I have no idea how old the battery is. Until now the bike has started without any issues. Battery was put on a tender all winter.

I have checked the battery using a multimeter:
Sitting at 12.3v consistently …. Even after sitting untouched for several days
Reading 14.6v-14.7v when bike is running
Drops to 10.3v on start up.

In the past couple of weeks there have been several occasions where the bike hesitates to start upon engagement of the starter, sometimes I get nothing, press the
Starter button a second time and fires right up. Just this past weekend I had to hit the button a 3rd time. When it does start there is no issue, no laboring like a weak
Battery or anything. Seems to be no pattern of hot/cold weather or anything.

If you get nothing, probably not the battery but just in case, make sure terminal connections are tight with a socketnot screwdriver. Starter issues are a common occurance and cleaning is easy.

Lots of info out there:

I agree with everyone but keep in mind that if you have 12.3 volts on your battery then it is not fully charged. 12.3 is about half charged. You might want to check your battery also.

Is it not a 12v system/battery in the 1800C ?

According to Honda, 12.4v or less at no load is less than 25% of life of the battery. The battery should be over 13v at no load. You should consider replacing it anyways

Hey Wrangler, Road Warrior is more knowledgeable than me with the electrics. They should probably call cars and bikes 13 volt systems. I notice that when you charge a battery it will usually charge up to 13.8 or more volts. When you stop charging they seem to drop to around 13.4 to 13.6 and hold there. I think that at 12 volts the battery in a car is considered dead (at least for starting purposes). Sounds like bikes are the same.
That's my experience anyway. Someone can jump in here and correct me if I'm wrong. It wouldn't be the first time................just ask my wife.

:stupid: When fully charged it should be between 13 - 14 V max.

Pulled the starter button out of it tonight ... yup ... contacts were dark brown (almost black).

Cleaned them up with a little emery cloth and slapped some dielectric grease on them ... seems good to go now.

 I've had a problem this year with another culprit...it's called the "starter switch relay". I haven't had a problem with my starter switch since I did the "maintenance job" on it back when it was near new. Then I start having problems again recently...much like a starter switch or bad battery problem. Testing with a voltmeter, (and the shop manual), is how I found the problem. The relay itself is easily found under the left side cover...but not so easily replaced. (those mounting nuts were a biatch to unfasten without bending the hell out of the mounting brackets). and if memory serves me, it's around a hundred dollar touch. Got that fixed, but now I also have battery trouble. I had bought a new battery a coupla years ago... a AGM even..cost me $175 then. Now it only will charge to 12.6 volts and is down to 10.4 volts by day three. Waiting for a new replacement out of the states. Don't even talk to me about warranty...most aren't worth the paper they're written on. Between this and "new house blues" I've had hardly any time for riding again this year. :nottalking:
